Black beast on the loose: ‘Oedipus/bêt noir’ by Wim Vandekeybus & Ultima Vez

People sometimes mock Belgian playwright and theatre director/legend Jan Decorte, for the so-called simplicity of his texts and the plays he brings to the stage. Buy a ticket for Oedipus/bêt noir, the newest piece by renowned Belgian choreographer Wim Vandekeybus, and you’ll see: Decorte’s work is far more clever than you’d think and it really isn’t that easy to cover (if you allow me to borrow a term from the pop world). I left the theatre (KVS, Brussels) with mixed feelings: the dance sections often are quite powerful and beautiful, Vandekeybus comes up with some strong visual images, but actors (and director) are struggling with Decorte’s text and don’t seem to have found the right path that would lead them to a really convincing performance.

Back to the valley: Wim Vandekeybus and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui revisit Paul Bowles

Take two renowned choreographers, put them on stage together and you’re sure to draw a good crowd. But for anyone buying a ticket there’s always that fear: will those choreographers, with their busy schedules, be able to devote enough time to such a one-off collaboration and come up with something good? Unfortunately, IT 3.0, by Belgian choreographers Wim Vandekeybus and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, presented at Toneelhuis (Antwerp) – only  four performances – showed two choreographers struggling with their past and ways to update it.

This is not a love song: seven youngsters give you the finger (‘Radical wrong’, Wim Vandekeybus)

All of a sudden they storm onto the stage. In what resembles a guerrilla attack, they kidnap a member of the audience, drag him on stage and then they rapidly disappear again, leaving that bewildered person alone on that big empty stage. Let there be no misunderstanding: nothing or nobody is safe, during Radical wrong, the new performance by Wim Vandekeybus. Seven youngsters with too much energy, dance, run and shout about.

Puppets, rifles and a missing finger: ‘Monkey Sandwich’ by Wim Vandekeybus

Anyone who’s ever seen a Wim Vandekeybus performance knows one thing: the guy likes to tell stories. Anyone who’s ever seen a Wim Vandekeybus performance knows another thing too: as a storyteller he’s a restless one. And this restlessness is, once again, what spoils Monkey Sandwich, his new performance. Even though the Belgian choreographer/director opts for film instead of dance, this time around. A film performance is what Vandekeybus calls it: apart from that big movie screen, there’s a naked guy running around on stage too.

Les SlovaKs are a bit too fond of their roots

Les SlovaKs. With such a name, you’d almost think they are a circus act. But no: Les SlovaKs Dance Collective consists of five dancers who have performed with contemporary dance companies such as Rosas, Ultima Vez (Wim Vandekeybus) and Akram Khan Company. As I had missed the first performance of these gifted guys, I was really curious to see their new one, Journey Home. It premiered yesterday at Brussels’ Kaaitheater.
