David & Goliath collaborating: CC Strombeek & SMAK set up 3-part exhibition ‘About waves’
Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt, Robert Ryman, Daniel Buren, Lawrence Weiner. It doesn’t happen very often that you’re able to see works by these artists outside a museum context ánd for free. You can now, if you make the trip to Strombeek (near Brussels). The local cultural centre has started a long-term collaboration with S.M.A.K., Ghent’s museum for contemporary art, and About waves is the first result of that. It’s a project about painting from the sixties till now: three exhibitions, each running a month. Het ding (The thing; through February 2) is the first and it presents, next to the afore-mentioned, works by Belgian artists such as Walter Swennen, Philippe Van Snick, Marthe Wéry, Ann Veronica Janssens, and Raoul De Keyser, who died last year and to whom About waves is dedicated. Modest and unassuming, but better than you’d think.
