Newsweek names Belgian artist Francis Alÿs one of the ten most important artists of today

Francis Alÿs has landed in New York (Moma) and that touchdown clearly isn’t missing its effect. American magazine Newsweek has just named the Mexico-based Belgian artist one of ‘the ten most important artists of today’ (‘artists who seemed ot just good, but so good they might enter the history books’). Also on the list of art critic Blake Gopnik are Jeff Wall, who’s having a wonderful exhibition at Bozar (Brussels) right now, and Sophie Calle, who had an exhibition at that same spot in the summer of 2009. The other artists on the Newsweek list (‘creators who could be the next Leonardo, Rembrandt or Picasso’) are Gillian Wearing, Christian Marclay, Marjetica Potrc, Artur Zmijewski, Tacita Dean, Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst. You’ll find the list here.
