Hip, hipper, hippest: trying to catch a glimpse of Hedi Slimane at Almine Rech

Sure, hip American artist (and collectors’ darling) Sterling Ruby was presenting a bunch of large new paintings at Xavier Hufkens (through April 9) around the corner, but thé place to be in Brussels, yesterday evening? Almine Rech Gallery. For the opening of Fragments Americana, an exhibition with photographs by revered fashion designer Hedi Slimane, the man who officially introduced the slim suit (and made Karl Lagerfeld want to lose enough weight so he could wear one). Funny to see people with iPhones and cameras anxiously waiting for Slimane to appear. Slimane is obviously a man with a keen eye and impeccable taste, and his black-and-white photographs do prove that as well.  He invited Gus Van Sant and Oscar Tuazon to join him for his exhibition in Brussels. Van Sant presents a ‘sonic improvisation’, Tuazon three new sculptures. In the other room at Almine Rech you’ll find works by Katja Strunz (both shows run through March 26). Click here for a Dazed & Confused interview with Slimane about how Los Angeles has influenced his work.
