Just for the elite? Anselm Kiefer draws 65.000 visitors, ‘Hareng Saur’ 50.000
Contemporary art just for the elite? Forget it. On the day that the Affordable Art Fair is landing in Brussels, showing off its circus-like ‘art is for everyone’ touch to contemporary art, let me list up some figures that prove that serious art is not only appealing to the happy few. Already 50.000 art lovers dropped by at SMAK (Ghent) for Hareng Saur (it ends this weekend), the Anselm Kiefer exhibition in Antwerp is a hit with 65.000 visitors so far, at Wiels (Brussels) they broke their all time record with 36.000 visitors for Francis Alÿs, and even Craigie Horsfield at MHKA drew some 22.000 art lovers. And let’s not forget Bozar (Brussels): Wim Delvoye’s goth art attracted more than 55.000 people and Luc Tuymans got off to a very strong start with 3.300 visitors during the first weekend.
