Looking for an ashtray to impress your friends with?

Don’t expect much. Just a lot of strangely shaped ceramics in different colours. Ashtrays, American artist Sterling Ruby calls them, these objects that look like they’ve come from outer space. ‘They explore the traditional language of design, art brut and minimalism’Galerie Pierre Marie Giraud (Brussels; near Zavel/Sablon) writes, in a press release.  Ruby’s work is much sought after by collectors, these days, and he had a show at Xavier Hufkens last year. I talked to him back then for my ongoing series of interviews about beauty (you’ll find the interview here), so I was curious what he would present at Pierre Marie Giraud. There are a couple of beautiful objects to be found among these Ashtrays (all from 2010; through November 6), but at the same time you sense that Ruby could make hundreds and hundreds of them, even if someone would blindfold him. Ruby, a multi-disciplinary artist, is preparing a new show for Xavier Hufkens. Hope he’ll surpass himself for that one.
