Where would artists be without applause?
Rock ‘n’ roll! Anyone who’s ever been to a Needcompany performance knows that the Belgian theatre company adores mixing in a pinch of rock ‘n’ roll attitude. Director Jan Lauwers keeps an art collective on the side too, with Needcompany musician Maarten Seghers: OHNO COOPERATION. They gave a one-off concert with a couple of special guests yesterday evening for the opening of a small-scale exhibition (‘De tragedie van het applaus’, till October 21) in Strombeek-Bever (near Brussels). The exhibition is centered around The guitarist, a picture from 1987 by renowned Canadian photographer Jeff Wall and wants to question notions and themes such as ‘beauty’, ‘pop culture’, ‘applause’ and ‘selling out’. Do expect a lot of feedback, once you enter that special hall created for this exhibition with works by Rombout Willems, Nicolas Field and OHNO COOPERATION. It’s the first part of a trilogy, The good, the bad & the ugly, with exhibitions in Mechelen and Strombeek. Bozar (Brussels) is having a major Jeff Wall exhibition in the summer of 2011. Some info about that here.
