Black is the colour… of your favourite clothes: ModeMuseum focuses on black and fashion

You’ll be disappointed at first. It will be as if you’re looking into a big black hole. You won’t see anything particular at all. But let your eyes get used to that darkness and you’ll discover a world of detail and… beauty. That was, at least, my experience when I dropped by, yesterday, at the opening of Black – Masters of black in fashion & costume, the new exhibition at ModeMuseum (Antwerp; through August 8). The exhibition illustrates different historical phases of the colour black, with examples from painting, historical costume and contemporary fashion. On display are some amazing designs by fashion designers such as Ann Demeulemeester, Raf Simons, Viktor & Rolf, Comme des Garçons, Alexander McQueen and Olivier Theyskens. You’ll be able to discover some ‘classic’ designs as well, such as Coco Chanel’s Ford dress from 1926 and Yves Saint Laurent’s influential smoking for ladies from 1966. The longer you stay, the more details you’ll discover in this beautiful world of black.
