Anna Wintour without sunglasses, by Alex Katz

Having seen The September issue, that strange documentary on the weird but influential Anna Wintour, probably the most important person in the world of fashion, I’m not entirely sure she’s going to like this portrait, by the wonderful American artist Alex Katz (82), but I’m sure the Vogue-editor will be charmed by the fact that her painting is going to be displayed in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Wintour’s portrait, which was unveiled by Katz today, is going to be part of a Katz exhibition which will run from May to September in London. And at least Katz has done something that not one  single fashion designer will ever dare to do: to ask Wintour to take off her sunglasses. Wintour’s commentary on her portrait, according to Vogue: ‘I was pleased to see that he used a lot of colour, which I adore.’ It’s the first ever portrait Wintour has ever consented to.
